A mattress is a big-ticket item, and you want to get the best price possible. A mattress is something you will have for many, many years so you want to make sure you get the best quality available. Unfortunately, there might be an ugly reason why that cheap mattress you've been eyeballing is priced so low.

Mattresses marked “discount” or “clearance” can sometimes not be new. Even new mattresses can be marked down if they're flawed in serious ways and make sure when you buy that the cheap mattress has a warranty and that it is a warranty that meets your needs and doesn’t sell you short.

When a Mattress Isn't New

Mattress sellers often have a large quantity of returned, damaged and open merchandise on their hands. One unscrupulous method of getting rid of this inventory, while realizing big profits, is to sell these used mattresses to unwitting customers. Sometimes the mattresses offered for sale are several years old.

One way to make sure you're not getting a floor model is to see if there is any discoloration at the bottom of the bed. In display models this area is often covered. Check for tape on the packaging, this may be a sign your cheap mattress could be a “re-bag” or have been damaged by a hole in the bag.

A Flawed Mattress

Are there any finish flaws, like unraveling seams or holes, in the cheap mattress you are looking at? Durability is a big issue as you want your new mattress to last at least 10 years, if not more. If there are major flaws in the mattress, you will not get a mattress that will last very long.

Inspecting the Warranty

Just like every new car, your mattress should have a warranty. Even a cheap mattress should have a manufacturer's guarantee that it will last 10 years. Some brands even have 20-year warranties and these warranties cover defects and flaws in the workmanship. Also, stores usually offer a comfort warranty that can last from two weeks to several months which will allow you to return or exchange a mattress that turns out to be uncomfortable.

Be aware that if a problem arises it may be difficult to get some companies to honor their warranty in a satisfactory manner. That is why it is important to check out a bed thoroughly in the store before making your purchase. A cheap mattress may seem like a deal, but it could turn into a major headache a few years down the line.
